University of Arkansas System – Cammack Campus has benefited from its selection as a Pulaski County Master Gardeners site since the group began work on its 40-acre campus when it opened in 1997.
Several areas of campus have been touched by the volunteer group over the decades, with the most recent being a President’s Garden located in the greenspace between the System President’s residence and the original Cammack Family log cabin. That garden became unmanageable due to excessive water runoff patterns and other environmental factors, leading to a recent shift of focus to the group’s most visible location at the main campus entrance off of both North University Avenue and Hawthorne Street.
Main Entrance Project

While the newest Pulaski County Master Gardeners project at UA System – Cammack Campus main entrance is in its early stages, the Master Gardeners’ vision for the space is clear.
Using plants, shrubs and trees that are all native to this location, the Master Gardeners’ plan will continue to take shape in the spring and summer of 2026 and beyond, especially as it matures and other species are introduced based on success and the effects of detrimental outside factors.
Mike Carter, grounds supervisor at the UA System – Cammack Campus who was honored with a Master Gardener award in 2023, helps the group when he’s able to and appreciates the effort.
“Thanks to the Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service and their Master Gardener program, we’ve done some things to really beautify the grounds here and the main entrance will be no different,” Carter said. “Once it begins taking shape, it’ll be a welcomed addition to the neighborhood and to all those passing by in cars and on foot.”
