LITTLE ROCK (April 2, 2021) – University of Arkansas System President Dr. Donald R. Bobbitt today announced the formation of an advisory committee to assist in the search for the next director of the Arkansas Archeological Survey (AAS).
Longtime AAS Director George Sabo, III joined the UA System entity in 1979 and became director in 2013. His retirement will be effective June 30.
The search committee, which will be chaired by Bobbitt, is charged with assembling candidates identified through a national search before Bobbitt ultimately recommends a finalist to the Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas. The committee conducted one preliminary meeting March 31 to introduce members and define its goals heading into the search. Bobbitt said the committee will take the time necessary to find the right person to lead the AAS.
“The Archeological Survey is a very unique member of the UA System and certainly has gained a great deal of respect both locally and nationally for the good work Dr. Sabo has done in his time there,” Bobbitt said. “The Survey operates a statewide program for research, public service, outreach and preservation through its 10 research stations across Arkansas. Finding the right fit to continue building on the work of Dr. Sabo is the top priority for this committee.”
